Varieties of Topological Groups were introduced by the speaker almost 50 years ago and Pro-Lie Groups were introduced by Karl Heinrich Hofmann and the speaker early this century. This seminar will assume minimal background knowledge of topological groups. The thrust will be to describe key results in both topics and how our knowledge is less about the disconnected case. This talk was first given last year at the conference ”Winter of Disconnectedness“.

The sloshing problem is a Steklov type eigenvalue problem describing small oscillations of an ideal fluid. We will give an overview of some latest advances in the study of Steklov and sloshing spectral asymptotics, highlighting the effects arising from corners, which appear naturally in the context of sloshing. In particular, we will outline an approach towards proving the conjectures posed by Fox and Kuttler back in 1983 on the asymptotics of sloshing frequencies in two dimensions. The talk is based on a joint work in progress with M. Levitin, L. Parnovski and D. Sher.

הכנסת מושג היריעה, על ידי גאוס ורימן מהווה את אחת מנקודות המפנה בהתפתחות הגיאומטריה. לאחרונה הסעיר את עולם המתמטיקה פתרון של בעיית הגיאומטריזציה של Thurston על ידי Grigori Perelman. פתרון שממיין במובן מסוים את כל היריעות הקומפקטיות התלת מימדיות.

אנחנו ננסה להבין במה מדובר דרך סקר של הבעיה הדו-מימדית (שהיא הרבה הרבה יותר פשוטה) ונסקור את הפתרון שלה.
