An analytic endomorphism of the unit disk is called an inner function if it’s boundary limit defines a transformation of the circle - which is necessarily Lebesgue nonsingular. I’ll review the ergodic theory of inner functions & then present results on:

– their structure;

– spectral gaps for their transfer operators; and

– a conditional central limit theorem;

all recently obtained with Mahendra Nadkarni.

Symplectic embeddings of balls into symplectic manifolds have been extensively studied since the famous non-squeezing theorem of Gromov (1985). However, even for basic closed symplectic manifolds, such as a complex projective space of real dimension 6 or higher, the classification of these embeddings up to a symplectomorphism of the target manifold is still unknown. I’ll discuss such a classification for a special kind of symplectic embeddings of balls - the so-called Kahler-type embeddings - that can be studied using complex geometry.

בסביבות 1637 פייר דה פרמה כתב באחד מספריו “גיליתי הוכחה נפלאה שלמשוואה $a^n+b^n=c^n$ אין פתרונות שלמים כאשר $n>2$ אך שוליים אלו צרים מלהכילה”. השערה זו, שכונתה המשפט האחרון של פרמה, נחשבה במשך כ-300 שנה לאחת הבעיות הקשות במתמטיקה עד שבשנת 1995 אנדרו ווילס הציג את ההוכחה שלו שמתבססת על כלים מודרנים וחדשניים מגיאומטריה אלגברית, מתורת המספרים, ומתורת ההצגות. בהרצאה זו אנחנו נציג את הרעיונות והמושגים ששיחקו תפקיד מרכזי בהוכחה, נדון בהוכחת המשפט, וכיצד הכל מתקשר לתחומי מחקר עכשווים.
