Discontinuity of the phase transition for the planar random-cluster and Potts models with q > 4

Apr 10, 11:00—12:00, 2018, 201

Speaker

Matan Harel (Tel Aviv University)

Abstract

The random-cluster model is a dependent percolation model where the weight of a configuration is proportional to q to the power of the number of connected components. It is highly related to the ferromagnetic q-Potts model, where every vertex is assigned one of q colors, and monochromatic neighbors are encouraged. Through non-rigorous means, Baxter showed that the phase transition is first-order whenever q > 4 - i.e. there are multiple Gibbs measures at criticality. We provide a rigorous proof of this claim. Like Baxter, our proof uses the correspondence between the above models and the six-vertex model, which we analyze using the Bethe ansatz and transfer matrix techniques. We also prove Baxter’s formula for the correlation length of the models at criticality. This is joint work with Hugo Duminil-Copin, Maxime Gangebin, Ioan Manolescu, and Vincent Tassion.

Abstract

Center of the Goldman Lie algebra

Apr 15, 14:30—15:30, 2018, -101

Speaker

Arpan Kabiraj (BGU)

Abstract

Abstract. In 1980s Goldman introduced a Lie algebra structure on the free vector space generated by the free homotopy classes of oriented closed curves in any orientable surface F. This Lie bracket is known as the Goldman bracket and the Lie algebra is known as the Goldman Lie algebra. In this talk I will discuss some basic properties of Goldman bracket and its relation with Teichmüller space. I will also show how techniques from geometric group theory could be used to compute center of the Goldman Lie algebra. I will mention some open problems related to Goldman bracket.

Applications of the Container Method

Apr 16, 14:10—15:10, 2018, -101

Speaker

Charles Wolf

Abstract

The Container Method, developed in 2015 by Balogh-Morris-Samotij and Saxton-Thomason, has produced numerous applications in combinatorics. We will discuss applications to triangle free graphs and an Erdos discrete geometry problem.
